Nimbochromis polystigma, formerly Haplochromis, is a Malawi mouthbrooder found throughout Lake Malawi. Though often labeled as a very aggressive fish, this may be exaggerated due to its large adult size, 10-12 inches, and fish diet. Regardless, they should not be housed with smaller or more docile cichlids.Polystigma has an impressive, brown leopard spot pattern as a juvenile. This coloration also adorns mature females for camouflage. Dominant males develop a blue-green and green-gold iridescent coloring, with yellow to red accents on the dorsal and anal fins. These fish are piscivores, meaning they eat other fish. They have been known to hunt in packs in the wild, but are successful predators independently as well. They have also been known to "play dead" to lure unsuspecting prey fish to a deadly fate. So, as mentioned previously, these fish should not be housed with fish that can be swallowed, but will need to be supplied with a meaty diet of cichlid pellets and supplemented with freeze-dried or frozen treats.
