Three-spot Eartheaters are beautiful fish, but they come from blackwater environments, and have to be kept in specific conditions in order to thrive. They are grey-green with three irregular black spots on each side the firs in the middle of the body, and the last at the base of the tail. Iridescent blue-green markings adorn the face and flanks. Orange may develop on the underside of the fish as it matures. These Earthaters have a triangular head, shaped to forage through the rocks and mud on the river bottom. Males tend to be slimmer than females. These fish have fascinating habits, frequently burrowing in the substrate and living up their name by moving pebbles and debris. They are peaceful for the most part, but may become territorial when breeding. Earth Eaters may be housed in a community setting, but only with fish large enough not to be eaten. They will feed on cichlid pellets and meaty frozen foods and cichlid diets. As blackwater fish, they require very soft and very acidic water with Ph of 5.0 or below. They are sensitive to water quality, and must be kept in pristine conditions.
