The grass cutter catfish, or African butter catfish, is a silver fish with an elongated body and a flat mouth. A darker silver stripe that is edged on the top and bottom by light gray stripes runs horizontally along the side of the body. The fins are transparent, and the long ventral fin runs from the belly to just in front of the base of the tail. These cats are scavengers, and in the wild feed on insects, larvae, fish, snails, plant seeds, and fruit. In the aquarium, they will eat most prepared and fresh foods. Grass cutter catfish are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least four fish. These fish can be kept with most community tankmates that are too large to be eaten.
