The Dwarf Zebra Lionfish is named for its brown and white banded coloration. Its spiny fins are banded as well. The pectoral fins of the Dwarf Zebra Lion are fan shaped and have shorter filaments than most lions. The body is stout and it has two short frills above its eyes. Dwarf Zebra Lionfish need plenty of hiding places to feel comfortable and do best in aquariums with lots of live rock or corals. Dwarf lionfish are most active at dusk and during the night when they emerge from their daytime hiding places to hunt or reproduce. They feed primarily on crabs and shrimp, but will also eat small fish. Dwarf Lionfish prefer to eat several small food items than one large food item. They are generally peaceful toward other fish that are too large for them to swallow and can be kept in groups. They may prefer live foods like ghost shrimp or guppies. Take care when working with or around these fish as their dorsal spines are venomous. Most injuries occur accidentally by not seeing the fish while doing routine maintenance. Medical attention may be required if stung.
