Protopterus aethiopicus aethiopicus “Marbled Lungfish” ? Small
The Lungfish is a hardy fish that can withstand a wide range of water conditions, as well as poorly oxygenated water. It occurs in muddy areas of slow-moving rivers or stagnant pools, and feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians, fish, and insect larvae. It is well-known for its very powerful jaws.In the aquarium, the lungfish can be fed most appropriately sized live foods, and can normally be trained to accept meaty foods such as beefheart and shrimp. The lungfish has a soft body that can be easily damaged by jagged rocks and gravel. For this reason they are best kept in fine sand or smooth-sided gravel. Lungfish can be reclusive, and will often spend time hiding. Provide subdued lighting and a hiding place such as a large PVC pipe or a cave made of rocks, driftwood, or another material.Because of its predatory nature and its ability to consume large prey, this fish should not be kept with any tankmates that are of edible size. On the other hand, its delicate skin and slowness also make it an easy target for harassment and injury by large aggressive species. For this reason, lungfish are usually best kept alone.
